ALEXANDER WANG and Samsung Electronics have collaborated to create the world's first crowd-sourced fashion bag which will be sold to raise funds for New York-based charity Art Start.
For the design of the gym sack, Wang enlisted his many fashion friends to each create drawings and sketches on Samsung's Galaxy Note II smartphone, which he then curated into one final print.
"The abstract print really captures the energy of New York City," the designer said. "This collaboration is a great example of how technology and style can come together in an unexpected but really meaningful way."
Art Start is a non-profit making organisation that uses art to bring positive change to communities, focusing on the artistic talent of at-risk children aged between five and 21 to provide them with the confidence to embark on meaningful career paths.
"This collaboration with Wang is so exciting because it really demonstrates how technology not only enables but empowers the creative process of fashion designers, artists, and creative individuals," said Younghee Lee, executive vice president of global marketing at Samsung.
The gym sack marks Wang's second accessories collaboration with Samsung in aid of Art Start. Earlier this year he created a limited-edition print that was featured on a bag and mobile phone cover.
BASSO & BROOKE, the original Fashion Fringe at Covent Garden winners of 2004, are back and branching out. Bruno Basso and Christopher Brooke have been on something of a quiet hiatus of late, but that's because they've been busy launching their menswear line, Basso & Brooke Studio.
"Menswear is a natural progression for our label and since the very beginning is something that has been requested over and over. This label is more of a design label rather than just being restricted to fashion," says Basso. "It's our laboratory for experimenting - everything that has a surface can be printed."
And that's exactly what they've been busy doing with any they find available - especially when it comes to sports apparel (Californian skateboards, Japanese bikes and saddles), interiors (soft furnishings, lampshades, scented candles, art posters), and accessories (bags, satchels, iPad cases, stationery, swimwear, footwear).
"It has taken us a good 18 months to get the new project from conception to full development. It is very important for this label to retain the quality and standards of the main line, but we wanted it to be more accessible to people - 'affordable luxury' is how we like to refer to it," elaborates Basso.
ALLSAINTS will make its New York Fashion Week debut in September. The retailer will hold a presentation on Sunday 8 and Monday 9, during which it will showcase its spring/summer 2014 collection.
The presentation will "disrupt the format of the traditional fashion show and integrate product, digital and music" in an "interesting and immersive" way, explains the show invite. Press and buyers will also be able to arrange one-on-one appointments with AllSaints chief creative director Wil Beedle.
The move marks a year of expansion plans for the label, which also launched a film production division, AllSaints Film, earlier this year. The company will commission young innovative filmmakers as well as produce its own in-house content - exploring everything from "music, style and street documentaries to cutting-edge moving installations" - the likes of which will undoubtedly be effectively utilised for the forthcoming NYFW presentation.
GISELE BUNDCHEN has topped the list of highest-earning models for the seventh year running. According to Forbes magazine, the supermodel took home $42 million (£27 million) in the space of a year - thanks to lucrative endorsement deals with H&M, Chanel, Pantene and David Yurman, as well as a stake in Brazilian footwear company Grendene and her own, increasingly profitable, lingerie label.
And it doesn't look as though anyone will overtake her any time soon, so large is the gap between her earnings and those of the second-placed Miranda Kerr. The Australian model was paid an estimated $7.2 million (£4.6 million) in 12 months - thanks in large part to her Kora Organics beauty line, as well as deals with Qantas, David Jones and Mango - which, while undeniably impressive, is almost six times less that of Bündchen.
Two new names to feature in the top ten list this year are Liu Wen (fifth place) and Joan Smalls (eighth). Wen was the first Chinese model to walk in the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show last year and is the face of Calvin Klein, Hugo Boss and Estée Lauder. Puerto Rican model Smalls was the first Latina ambassador for Estée Lauder and has also racked up impressive endorsement contracts with Givenchy, Fendi, Prabal Gurung and H&M.
Interestingly, eight out of the top 10 models are all either currently Victoria's Secret Angels or have modelled for the lingerie label in the past - showing that the brand's international exposure still remains hugely profitable for its model cast. And next year? Forbes predicts that Karlie Kloss and Kate Upton could make their top 10 debut, while VS regulars Doutzen Kroes and Alessandra Ambrosio, who both dropped off the list this year, are equally likely to make a comeback.
